Bike Camp teaches safe riding for kids
Columbus Parks & Recreation recently completed its annual Summer Bike Camp lead by Aquatics Director, Jim Lemke. Twenty kids participated in this 3-day camp, held at Donner Park from July 18-20. Ten children knew how to ride without training wheels and worked on things like the rules of the road, hand signals, trail etiquette, and recognizing and avoiding hazards. There were ten children who could not ride without training wheels and by the end of the camp all ten were riding without their training wheels!
Bike Camp is a great way to ensure that your child can ride safely and without training wheels. If you know a child who could use help with their bike riding skills, make sure to look out for the dates for next year's camp. In the meantime, check out this printable sheet on bike safety for kids from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you would like to organize your own bicycle safety class, check out the Bike Rodeo Toolkit created by Healthy Communities and Bartholomew County Safe Routes to School Initiative.
