Best sledding hills in Columbus, Indiana

Sledding can be a fun way to get outside during the winter, get some exercise and to instill an appreciation of the outdoors in your kids.

We don't always get a lot of snow in Columbus, Indiana, but that doesn't stop my kids from wanting to go sledding every time there's even remotely enough snow to make sledding possible. However, in such a flat city, it can be difficult to find the best spots to go sledding!

Here are a few of the best spots:

Mill Race Park

Mill Race Park has long been a favorite spot for sledding in Columbus. The big hill behind the amphitheater (near the 5th Street entrance) is a popular location for putting that sled to use on those snowy days.

Tipton Lakes Dam on W Goeller Rd

Residents of Tipton Lakes and others on the west side of the city can often be found sledding down the side of the Eastlake dam off of W Goeller Rd, west of Shoreline Dr. However, steer clear of a metal drain cover toward the base of the hill.

Clifty Creek Elementary School

Those who want to go sledding on the east side of town outside of school hours may want to check out the hill behind Clifty Creek Elementary (4625 E 50 N).

Rocky Ford Par 3 Golf Course

The Par 3 Golf Course off of Rocky Ford Dr has another hill for sledding on those snowy days. The hill is located near the corner of Rocky Ford Dr and Duffer Dr. It's a long gradual slope that, as I was told by a Columbus native, can be a lot of fun with the right kind of snow.

I hope this gives you some ideas for where to go sledding if we ever get a decent amount of snow. Do you know of any other great local sledding hills? Contact us if there are any others we should add to the list.

Here are some other ideas for if you're willing to look outside Columbus for your sledding, tubing or tobogganing fun.

Other fun sledding, tubing and tobogganing spots outside of Columbus:

Greenwood - Freedom Park has a great sledding hill.

Indianapolis - Fort Harrison State Park has sledding and visitors can also try ice fishing.

If you're feeling more adventurous, the following slopes offer tubing and tube rentals:

Perfect North (near Cincinnati, about 1.5 hours southeast)

Paoli Peaks (about 1.5 hours southwest)

OR if you're looking to make a bigger trip,

Pokagon State Park (near Angola, IN, 3 hours north) has a refrigerated toboggan run. Toboggans must be rented.

Happy sledding!
