Bike Month 2018 is here!


We're excited to begin a month full of activities to celebrate the bicycle and get our community moving! We kick off with Handlebar Happy Hour (May 1st) and finish with the Haw Creek Bridge Ride (date TBA), and there's a lot of fun for everyone in between!

Some key dates to remember: Bike to School Day is May 9th, Bike to Work with the Mayor Day and Cummins Bike to Work Day are on May 16th, and the Big Bike Month Ride is on May 23rd.

Tuesday, May 1st - HANDLEBAR HAPPY HOUR

Join Energy Matters to kick off Bike Month and socialize with other cyclists. Short presentation at 6:30pm by City Engineer Dave Hayward. Free appetizers and cash bar. Bike valet parking provided. 6-8pm at Upland’s Columbus Pump House at 148 Lindsey St.

Saturday, May 5th - COLUMBUS BMX SEASON OPENER

Join Columbus BMX on Saturday, May 5th as they kick off their 16th season of family fun and racing excitement! All ages and skill levels are welcome!

FREE loaner bikes, Strider bikes and helmets are available for new riders.

- Registration & Practice 5:30-7:00pm, Racing ASAP

- $5 Strider, $10 class or cruiser, $15 both

Sunday, May 6th - SAFE KIDS DAY

Visit Kidscommons for free from 1-5pm, thanks to Dorel Juvenile and Safe Kids Bartholomew County.

Wednesday, May 9th - WALK & BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY

Whether walking or biking, join your child on their way to school!

Thursday, May 10th – ‘SMILE MORE’ BIKE RIDE

Want to smile more? Try riding a bike! Meet at the Commons for a social, casual bike ride to raise awareness about Mental Health. Mental Health screenings will be available. 6pm. Info: Nichole Vreeland (812)376-5092 nvreeland@crh.org

Saturday, May 12th – TOUR DE TRAILS BICYCLE CHALLENGE

Participate in the 20k, 50k or 80k rides starting at the Donner Park shelterhouse. Registration at 8am, start at 9am. Info: columbusparkfoundation.org

Monday, May 14th – LATINO NIGHT @ BIKE CO-OP

Our volunteers speak Spanish and are available to help you from 5:30-7:00pm on the second Monday of each month.

Nuestros voluntarios hablan Espanol y estaran disponibles para ayudarte de 5:30 a 7:30 pm el segundo lunes de cada mes.

Non-spanish speakers are also welcome!

BIKE TO WORK WEEK

Encourage friends, coworkers and family members to ride!

Wednesday, May 16th – BIKE TO WORK DAY

Join Mayor Lienhoop and other community leaders as they commute to work by bike! Rides will leave from various areas. Breakfast will be offered at Irwin Office Building Plaza at 5th & Jackson St from 7:30-8:30am. See the Facebook event here.

Saturday, May 19th

RED NOSE RIDE

Ride to support the Red Nose charities and end child poverty! 12 and 30 mile rides with SAG stops. The Entry Fee is $10 per rider payable on the day of the event by cash or check only. The ride will start and end @ W. D. Richards Elementary School 3311 Fairlawn Dr.

ATTERBURY HONOR RIDE

Help a veteran - save a life! Honor Rides help raise funds for vital programs that support America's healing heroes. This ride starts at 8am at Camp Atterbury Railhead. Tuesday, May 22nd – BIKE TO THE BREWERY

Columbus Women’s Ride to 450 North for a tour and tasting. Everyone welcome – not just ladies! 21 & over (only for this ride). Departs from Hamilton Center at 6pm.

THE BIG BIKE MONTH RIDE

Join the Bicycle Station and the Wednesday Night Downtown Road Bikers for a fun 10 or 25 mile bike ride starting at Donner Park Shelter at 6pm. Routes marked. All skills levels (and types of bikes) welcomed. Pitch-in dinner afterwards with main dish provided by the Bicycle Station.

Friday, May 25th

‘I’M SAFE ON MY BIKE’ STORYTIME

Bring kids aged 3-7 to the library for a storytime & craft about bicycle safety in the Red Room at 3:30pm. Safe Kids Bartholomew County will give away bicycle safety activity books. Children's Bureau donated a bike & helmet for a drawing. Info: www.mybcpl.org

FULL MOON RIDE

Meet at 4th & Washington Streets for a moonlit ride around the People Trails! Bring your helmet & lights. This casual, social ride starts at 9:01pm.

Saturday, May 26th - BICYCLE STATION GARAGE SALE

The Bicycle Station is clearing out their garage and offering tons of bikes and gear at discounted prices. 10am-4pm Info: www.thebicyclestation.com

Tuesday, May 29th - BIKE SMART STORYTIME

Bring kids aged 8-12 to the library for a storytime & craft about bicycle safety in the Red Room at 4pm. Safe Kids Bartholomew County will give away bicycle safety activity books. Info: www.mybcpl.org

***HAW CREEK BRIDGE RIDE - postponed - date to be announced***

Ride over the newest section of the People Trail with the engineers who helped design and install it! Engineers from Strand will lead the ride, starting at 6pm at the parking lot of the former Republic building near the corner of 1st & Washington, and stop at the Haw Creek bridge to provide more info about the project. New date in early June, TBA.

CCF MONDAY NIGHT RIDE - Departs from Columbus Cycling & Fitness every Monday at 6:10pm. Average pace 18 mph

COLUMBUS WOMEN’S RIDE - Departs from 5th and Lindsey every Tuesday at 6pm! Open to everyone (not just ladies) - this is a great ride for beginners.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ROAD BIKERS - The ride for everyone - meeting at different places each Wednesday and followed by a pitch-in or restaurant dinner afterwards. Starts at 6:00pm. Info: WEDNESDAY NIGHT DOWNTOWN ROAD BIKERS Facebook Group

BICYCLE STATION RIDE - The Bicycle Station has weekly rides on Saturday mornings. Departs from the Bicycle Station at varying times. This ride is two-three hours at a moderate 15-17 mph pace. Info: www.thebicyclestation.com
