Walk with Ease returns in September 2018
"This class really helped me get started on the right track."
- Walk with Ease participant
Do you or a loved one have arthritis and want to become more physically active? If so, the Walk With Ease Program may be the right choice. This eight week program is held at FairOaks Mall and led by instructors from Mill Race Center and Purdue Extension. The only requirement is that participants can be on their feet for 10 minutes without increased pain.
Even in only eight weeks, the program has had very positive results and has been proven to proven to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve your overall health. Locally, assessments before and after the program showed improvements in participants' perceived physical limitations as well as their pain and fatigue. Previous participants have commented that not only did the program improve on their health and fitness but helped them become more active and enjoy walking more. One participant said that "A year ago, I could barely walk around the mall. Now, I try to go three days a week, and I usually walk around the mall at least 3 times, usually 4 or 5."
Walking in groups is shown to have benefits. Another Walk With Ease participant commented "I enjoyed the social aspect of the class. It made walking time go by faster when I had people to talk to." Peer support groups can help you to stay motivated and accountable. The program makes it easy to stay motivated, between the in-person walks three times per week as well as various online tools and videos to help you with your walking program.
If you're not a candidate for or can't participate in Walk With Ease, the American Heart Association has some great resources for starting your own walking group. Another great option is signing up for Get WalkIN, a free, e-mail based walking program that provides tips and encouragement for walking and starts on September 24th.
