Walking Month - WALKtober 2018 is here!

Updated: Jun 26, 2019

Our 4th Annual celebration of WALKtober (Walking Month) has now begun, and this year we're looking forward to some fun new events and activities to inspire you to get up and get moving! We are once again offering a variety of events, from Walk to School Day to an Introduction to Race Walking, we hope that there will be something to interest everyone. This year, we are especially pleased to be able to offer the Positivity Path, a project sponsored by ASAP Bartholomew County, that will not only get you moving but provide inspiring messages about mental health and substance abuse recovery.

The Move More Challenge is a new part of WALKtober, and aims to encourage you to get a few more steps each day, or to try a new fun activity that gets you up off the couch! Aim to get 10,000 steps a day or 30 minutes of healthy activity at least 5 times a week. Read our blog post for more information. #movemore

The Positivity Path is a one mile walking loop around Mill Race Park with inspirational signs to promote awareness of mental health and substance abuse recovery, offered in partnership with Columbus Parks & Recreation and sponsored by ASAP Bartholomew County. The Path is now open, so we hope it will inspire you and encourage you to talk a walk! #positivitypath

The Walk Your City wayfinding signs will be making an appearance again. These signs promote walking around downtown Columbus by informing pedestrians about how far it is to walk to different landmarks. They'll inject a bit of fun into your walks around downtown! #walkyourcity

Share your pics of your #WALKtober experiences on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages to help inspire others to get moving.

Some other interesting walking programs:

Bartholomew County Purdue Extension is working to motivate individuals through their free email based walking program, Get WalkIN, which provides information and support. Although the program started on Sept 24th, you can register up until October 1st.

The Walk with Ease Program is a program of the Arthritis Foundation and is offered locally through a partnership between Purdue Extension and Mill Race Center. This program also started on September 24th but registration will remain open until October 1st.
