Columbus Running Club helps locals become (and stay) active
Updated: Apr 30, 2019
Getting motivated to exercise can be difficult. For many Columbus runners and walkers, the Columbus Running Club (CRC) helps to make it a lot easier to get out and exercise each week. The Running Club meets every Saturday to run or walk a 6 mile route. The Running Club not only provides camaraderie during runs, but they also take all the guess work out of it, with routes mapped out and water stops provided.
The Running Club meets outside the CRH Dialysis Center on Saturdays at 7:30am (from October to March) to run the mapped route, with water stops provided along the way. The Saturday morning group is informal and non-members are welcome to run/walk as well. They typically have at least 15-20 participants, although during peak season they may have 30 or more. They have about 5 regular walkers in the Saturday morning group and welcome people of all ages and paces to join.
In addition to their regular Saturday runs, they also do a lot of good in our community in other ways. The Columbus Running Club:
Supports training for the Mill Race Marathon
Provides scholarships to high school seniors who have either been cross-country and/or track and field athletes - provided two $1000 scholarships in 2018
Provides organizational and social support for the Youth Running Club and programs
Helps coordinate and provides logistical support to several local races and events
In late January/ early April they start increasing mileage slowly to build up to half marathons in Indianapolis, Seymour and Louisville in May. So if you're looking to run a half or full marathon this year, the time to start thinking about training is now!
We all know that physical activity can improve your health and quality of life. What some people may not know is that exercising as a group has shown to have numerous benefits as well. Unfortunately, people in Bartholomew County (and in our state and country in general) are not active enough, with around 29% reporting NO leisure time physical activity in the last month (according to the 2018 Community Health Assessment). For some people, exercising with others can be a great way to stay motivated and accountable.
We're fortunate to have a great running club here in Columbus. According to longtime member and Communications Officer Bill Krieg, they "encourage anyone to show up, member or not. The Club wants people to be healthy. It doesn't matter how fast or slow they are. It matters that they have made a commitment to themselves to get healthier. CRC can help provide some motivation and support."
The CRH Dialysis Center mentioned above is located at 2325 18th St, Columbus, IN - near the corner of 18th and Haw Creek Ave.
During the spring & summer (April - October), the Columbus Running Club meets at 7am at the Irwin Plaza on 5th Street, opposite White River Running Company (325 5th St, Columbus, IN).
