Bike Month 2020: the virtual / social distancing edition

Updated: May 20, 2020

Bike Month is here, and we're excited to celebrate all things bicycling! The need for physical distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic means that we will be doing things a lot differently this year. Many of our events will be online; virtual meetings on Zoom and Facebook Live videos feature heavily on our Bike Month schedule for 2020. We want to ensure that you have plenty of opportunities to get out and ride your bicycle, so there are other social distancing friendly activities such as a Bike Ride Bingo scavenger hunt that can be done any time throughout the month. Check out the schedule below, and scroll down for all the details and links.

Tuesday, May 5th

FIX A FLAT CLINIC, 6:30 pm

Matthew Thompson from the Bicycle Station will be teaching a Fix a Flat Clinic on Facebook Live via the Bicycle Station's Facebook page. Join him at 6:30 pm to learn how to fix a flat.

Thursday, May 7th

HANDLEBAR HAPPY HOUR, 6 - 8 pm

Join us for an online Happy Hour to celebrate Bike Month and socialize with cyclists and bicycling supporters from 6 to 8 pm. There will be presentations by Nancy Tibbett from Bicycle Indiana and Emilie Pinkston from the City of Columbus. Bring your own beverage and snack and join in from the comfort and safety of your own home. Zoom meeting details to follow.

Wednesday, May 13th

DINE TO DONATE AT BUCCETO'S, 4 - 9 pm

Support Columbus Bike Co-op and enjoy a delicious meal from Bucceto's! Mention your support for the Columbus Bike Co-op when you order from Bucceto's from 4 pm to 9 pm and they will generously donate 20% of your bill to this local, non-profit organization. Bucceto's is located in The Commons on Washington St in downtown Columbus.

Thursday, May 14th

FIX A FLAT CLINIC, 6:30 pm

DIY BIKE RODEO, 2 pm

Join Healthy Communities to learn how you can help your kids develop better bicycle skills by making your own Bike Rodeo for them! Using chalk and a few common household items, you can create a course to help kids and adults practice their bike skills. Watch on Facebook live at 2 pm on the Healthy Communities Facebook page.

Monday, May 18th

BICYCLE FUN STORYTIME, 10 am

Bartholomew County Public Library will provide a Bicycle Fun Storytime in honor of Bike Month. Check out their Facebook page for a fun video of stories that will be posted at around 10 am and will be available to view any time after that.

Wednesday, May 27th (date changed from May 20th)

ZWIFT BIKE MONTH RIDE, 6 pm

In lieu of the Big Bike Month Ride, this year we will host a Bike Month Ride on Zwift at 6 pm for those who have indoor trainers. If you don't have a Zwift membership, a 7-day free trial is available so you can participate for free. Further details to follow.

Here are some other activities you can enjoy on your own or with your family throughout the month:

BIKE RIDE BINGO

Purdue Extension and Columbus Parks & Recreation have worked hard to set up a 9 location scavenger hunt all around town. Fill up your bingo card and submit your entry to Columbus Parks & Rec via Facebook message to be entered into a drawing for prizes. Download your bingo card here.

BIKE TO SCHOOL

Schools are still closed so we won't have Bike to School Day this year, but that doesn't mean you can't bike to school anyway! Show your love for Columbus and for your school. Bike to one of our ‘bikeable’ schools and take a selfie with your Columbus Logo coloring sheet.

KEEP OUR TRAILS CLEAN

Help make Columbus better for cycling by helping keep our trails clean. Pick up litter in your neighborhood or along your favorite section of the People Trail.

While our local Bike Month celebration is coordinated by Healthy Communities, we simply can't do it without all of our community partners. We couldn't possibly thank them enough, but here's a quick mention of the businesses, groups and organizations that played a part in Bike Month 2020: Columbus Bike Co-op, Bartholomew County Public Library, City of Columbus, Bicycle Indiana, The Bicycle Station, Columbus Parks & Recreation, Purdue Extension of Bartholomew County, Landmark Columbus, and Columbus Regional Health.
